Research showed that many households that were provided with basic water and sanitation services have joined the backlog again due to the infrastructure not being used for the purpose it was intended to. Research also showed that in most cases the technology provided seemed to be adequate in providing sanitation services, however, the use of the technology and its acceptance by the users were key factors that impacted on the sustainability of the technology. This chapter shows some of the results of assessments that were conducted by the CSIR and draws the attention to the user issues and their impact on providing sustainable sanitation services in addressing the sanitation backlog in South Africa.
