This document provides a comprehensive review of the planned South African scientific activities in Antarctica and on the sub-Antarctic islands in the five year period starting in 1978. The scientific programmes are classified under five headings, viz, solar-terrestrial physics, earth sciences, biology, meteorology and environmental monitoring. The contents of the programmes have been finalized after various factors have been taken into account. These factors include national and international needs as well as availability of manpower, finances and logistics.
