dc.description.abstract The purpose of this synthesis of long term experiments was to develop an account of how the principal determinants (rainfall, soil type, woody/grass ratio, herbivory, fire) influence the dynamics of the grass layer of southern African savannas. The review covers bush clearing, fertilization, grazing, fire, reclamation and exclusion experiments, and appropriate monitoring sets. The 126 experiments included provide a poor data base because of defects in experimental design, a low intensity of sampling, inappropriate indices for assessing change, and inadequate presentation of data. en
