dc.description.abstract Reliable values of in situ stress are essential for the valid modelling of mine layouts. Available non-strain gauge methods are reviewed as potential practical techniques for South African mines. From this review it is concluded that the most suitable “new” method of in situ stress measurement is the use of Kaiser effect gauging, with the Kaiser effect change point being determined by means of acoustic emission monitoring. It is recommended that some research and development of this method should be funded to gain the necessary familiarity and experience with its application to make it a routine method of in situ stress measurement in South Africa en
