Deep shaft drum winder operations will be allowed if such winder installations comply with the requirements of a code of practice (SABS0294). The specifications of the winder code of practice were largely based on experience, but some uncertainty existed regarding the effectiveness of some of the specifications in the code. These were drum and head sheave sizes, rope layers, and the maximum dynamic rope load range allowed. The objectives of the investigations described in this report were to determine the effectiveness of the specifications regarding the mentioned uncertainties. The investigations of this report generally only considered triangular strand ropes.
