The objective of this project was to determine the performance characteristics of containment elements of tunnel support in common use in South African mines under dynamic loading. The magnitude of the energy levels in this testing had to be compatible with that which could be expected to be encountered during reasonably severe to significantly large bursts. To achieve this drop weight test facility was designed and constructed with the following capabilities, considered to be representative of severe rock bursts.
