Knowledge of the in situ state of stress in a rock mass is essential for the proper planning and design of mine layouts to optimise stability and safety of mining operations. The in situ state of stress in a rock mass can be determined by direct measurement, and there are numerous methods of measurement which are currently in use. This report presents a literature survey of existing methods of in-situ stress measurement including an evaluation of the applicability of these methods in the deep level gold mines. As well as a theoretical feasibility study of a potential method which will be cost effective and practical, and applicable to the gold mine situation. |
