Apart from the major constituents of the ash of a coal, every coal contains a great number of trace elements. In many cases the suitability of a coal for certain purposes depends on the concentration of these trace elements in the coal. The first report on the occurrence of vanadium in coal may have come from Kyle (3) in 1982.
